Waterloo Park, Canada

Combining community with sustainability

Waterloo Park, often referred to as the “jewel of the city”, has been a central component of the community for more than a century. The most recent redesign of the park focused on sustainability and ecological balance.

Old trees were preserved, ecological areas were enhanced, and the shoreline of Silver Lake and Laurel Creek were redesigned. The layout encompasses modern facilities like a city beach, promenades, outdoor hospitality as well as fascinating sculptures and water fountains.

The lighting design by the Seferian Design Group emphasises safety, visual appeal, and comfort. Strategically positioned pole-top luminaires in the car park, bollards along the pedestrian walkways, location luminaires at the waterfront lookout points, and recessed wall luminaires along the main promenades create a harmonious and inviting environment. The illumination combines functionality and aesthetics and ensures that the park is an inviting location by day and by night. Energy-efficient LED technology minimises light pollution and keeps the natural, yet urban charm of the park intact.

The landscaping at Waterloo Park incorporates innovative strategies to address climate change, stormwater management and waste minimisation to improve health and safety and enhance the quality of life of its visitors. The design process focused primarily on long-term sustainability, while at the same time promoting inclusion, diversity, and accessibility.

Four illuminated water fountains along the waterfront promenade are among the most high-visibility landmarks. The Welcome Fountain greets arriving visitors with breathtaking light displays, while the cascading waterfall commands attention with its dynamic visuals and soothing sounds. The illuminated jets of the water playground invite playful interaction, while the tree sculpture combines nature and technology in dynamically sculpted mists.

The illumination along the waterfront promenade ensures safety and security, while also underlining the beauty of the surroundings. Since the re-opening of the park in 2023, evening use has increased significantly, which demonstrates the community's appreciation of this well-lit public space.
