Fraser Mills Presentation Centre, Canada

The start of a new community at the water’s edge

The Fraser Mills Presentation Centre is the starting point and iconic landmark for the design of the first harbour area of South Coquitlam (British Columbia). This 10-million-dollar project not only marks the beginning for a highly ambitious transformation project – on the terrain of the Fraser Mills project spanning 96 hectares, but will also document the locations rich history and its promising future.

The structure designed by Patkau Architects combines the historical past of the old sawmill with modern architectural features. The Presentation Centre offers comprehensive information about the overall plan for the project and offers two show homes for visitors. Wood is used as the base material for this ensemble and honours the origins of the location, while at the same time emphasising sustainable construction methods.

“For this project, my goal was to allow the exterior architecture to shine from a distance, and to visually lead visitors to this impressive structure. The illumination of the undulating roof soffit specifically highlights the Presentation Centre where the roof line meets the sky.”

- Victor Quezada, AES Lighting Designer

The lighting design plays a major role in the realisation of this vision. The illumination concept created by the AES lighting designers accentuates special architectural features, while at the same time ensuring superior functionality and sustainability. Recessed in-ground luminaires are placed strategically to evenly illuminate the underside of the undulating solid-wood roof. Wall luminaires highlight the pillars. Bollards create a demarcation of the car park area and ensure safe traffic guidance.

The detailed control of the illumination adds to the visual impact of the Presentation Centre. Illumination zones are defined by their elevation, facilitate uniform brightness across all surfaces and can be controlled individually. The downward directed pillars of light transpose the design language seamlessly from the outdoor to the indoor area. The discreet bollards ensure the necessary illumination of the car park, while complying with Dark Sky requirements to keep disturbance for nocturnal animals to a minimum.

Over the coming decades, the Fraser Mills project will develop into an increasingly vibrant area with residential buildings, shops, squares, green spaces, restaurants and a water sports and community centre. The light planning will play a decisive role in creating an inviting ambience, while ensuring safety in all public spaces.
