Metronom Theatre, Oberhausen

The rejuvenation of a cultural jewel

Metronom Theatre in Oberhausen, one of the largest stage venues in the Ruhr region, is steeped in tradition, but is now presented in a new light following its comprehensive modernisation. The overall concept speaks to the theatre’s artistic versatility combined with contemporary staging. BEGA luminaires take centre stage here: They highlight central areas like the lobby, wardrobe, and VIP lounge, creating an ambience that is as elegant as it is inviting.

Das Metronom Theatre has grown into a major cultural institution in the Ruhr region over the past 25 years, featuring shows like “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Dance of the Vampires”. After four years of inactivity (2020-2024), the company Semmel Concerts took over the theatre and contracted Stapelbroek for comprehensive renovations of the building. The venue now offers space for up to 1800 patrons, and can host musicals, concerts, and events. An elegant design featuring blue, gold, and wood elements, combined with sophisticated lighting concepts give the theatre a new face.

The newly conceived VIP lounge of the theatre combines stylish design features with functional lighting. The most eye-catching central feature is the curved bar with its textured front, complemented by harmoniously arranged seating groups. Large-format pictures on the walls create cultural accents. The BEGA STUDIO LINE pendant luminaires ensure well-balanced lighting: direct illumination for the bar counter and tables, and indirect light for a softer illumination of the ceiling. The sophisticated interplay of materials, colours, and lighting design give the space an exclusive air and ensure excellent eye comfort for patrons.

BEGA luminaires are central components of the overall concept. Slimline, cylindrical STUDIO LINE pendant luminaires underline the generous dimensions of the lobby and emphasise the inviting ambience, preparing patrons for the stimulating theatre experience to come. Along the impressive main counter in the entrance area, along with additional counters in the theatre, these pendants create a clear and inviting visual structure with downward-directed, glare-free lighting. This thoughtful design exudes a warm and welcoming ambience. The pendant luminaires create attractive counterpoints with their combination of a velvet black exterior with a glossy metallic interior finish. This contrast introduces striking accents in the room and generates a pleasant light ambience. The wardrobe area beyond the main counter was similarly equipped with pendant luminaires. The conical shape of these pendants directs the warm light softly downward to allow precise, glare-free illumination of the surfaces.

The VIP lounge at the Metronom Theatre showcases modern design and premium furnishings, offering an elegant sanctuary for distinguished guests. The room combines warm wood elements with deep blue upholstered furniture and gold-colour accents, creating an exclusive yet inviting atmosphere.
