Traditional craftsmanship meets modern architecture

The Craft College in Horsens is a newly constructed campus designed to promote craft skills and create an inspiring environment for students. The campus was constructed on the terrain of a former freight yard and embraces its historical context, while giving the area a completely new function.

The Craft College hosts three main areas: There are workshops, a community centre and apartment buildings, which are all arranged around a central rainwater reservoir. The workshops and the community centre create a transition to the city, while the apartment buildings are surrounded by landscaped greenery with lush shrubs and paved footpaths. These elements create a relaxed environment for the students to meet up in nature. The lighting design of the Craft College focuses on responsible and understated illumination to highlight materials, without imposing on he inhabitants. The lighting elements were chose with care to ensure harmony in the overall architectural concept.

The combination of traditional materials and modern architecture lends the building a unique, functional and aesthetic quality. Of particular note is the brick-red Harris floor covering, which is used both outdoors and in, creating a visual connection between the areas.

The BEGA light solutions used here – including BEGA system bollards and BEGA recessed wall luminaires – were integrated in such a way that they additionally enhance architectural features and the natural materials used. A long-term advantage of this project is the 20-years availability guarantee for replacement parts and LED modules, which ensure the longevity and continuity of the lighting system. This long-term availability will ensure that the original aesthetic and functional flair of the Craft College will be maintained without any drawbacks in quality for many years to come.
