A heavy cellar door grants access to a hidden world. In the middle of the hip London district of Soho – and yet far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Since its opening, the underground Soma Bar has been one of the trendiest meeting points in the British metropolis. Its interior design creates an inviting social atmosphere, without neglecting the characteristic elements of a traditional speakeasy bar: the hidden, the mysterious, the forbidden. The consciously timeless lighting concept with BEGA spherical luminaires accentuates this atmosphere.
So-called speakeasy bars are a relic from the time of prohibition, when they served as hidden locations for social gatherings. Although it is no longer necessary in today’s London, this type of bar shows that serving alcohol in secret continues to hold the allure of the forbidden. In the Soma Bar, deep blue curtains underline the mysterious ambiance and bring to mind the nearby West End theatres. The special lighting arrangement skilfully illuminates the dark curtains by placing BEGA wall luminaires between them.
